Anna Paola Pizzocaro
I was born in Milan, successfully graduating in Italy from the Fine Art Academy of Milan, and in France where I obtained a post-diploma qualification at theENSAD ( Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Décoratifs ) in Paris in 1998, I later pursued and achieved an MFA from Sorbonne University in Paris with Honors (Paris 1).
After Graduation in Paris I worked for Mikros Image and Duran Duboi and I was involved in the Post Production of some famous movies such as Polanski 's "The Ninth Gate", Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar" by Claude Zidi , "Joan of Arc" by Luc Besson and "Epouse - moi" by Harriet Marin, to finally move on to work on various advertising campaigns.
My interest in photography constantly and significantly increased to the extent of driving me towards a deeper desire to study and discover the countless possibilities this mighty artistic medium provides. I graduated from ICP of NYC (USA) in 2009.
I had the wonderful chance to work for David LaChapelle in his New York Studio for three years in a motivating environment.
My current and past exhibition schedule with a positive feedback both from the critics and the audience counts in - just to name a few - Miami, Las Vegas, New York, Washington DC, Dubai, London,Milan, Paris, Padua , Genoa, the Art Museum of Chianciano (Florence), the Natural History Museum in Milan, at Quirinal Palace in Rome in collaboration with the Ministry for Cultural Heritage.
My first solo museum exhibition was held at the Lu.C.C.A ( Center of Contemporary Art in Lucca ) in Tuscany back in 2012, under the artistic direction of Maurizio Vanni, where was exhibited my series "Unanswered Prayers", featuring a full 30 large-format works.
During my career, I received various awards in New York, in London, in Milan, Linz in Austria and in Monte Carlo. In Linz, back in 2000, I was conferred a very significant recognition : the Honorary Mention for the International Prix Ars Electronica in Computer Animation.
In 2014 my series "Unanswered Prayers" has been object of a solo show at the Italian Embassy in Washington DC, USA.
My Catalogs are available for public Consultation at the Library of The National Museum Of Women in the Arts in Washington Dc, and at the New York Public Library (NYC).
My photographic artworks are included in famous museums collections such as the Phillips Collection in Washington DC.
In New York I absorb the energy of a city that does not give up , open and international.
Text by Bernard Yenelouis (Cornell University) for my Project, "Unanswered Prayers":
The maxim of St. Theresa of Avila, "There are more tears shed for answered prayers, than unanswered ones" provides a theological entry into Anna Paola Pizzocaro's series Unanswered Prayers. The photograph has been understood as an industrial apparatus, a scientific viewing machine, which can reproduce optically the physical surfaces of a subject, outside an ostensible subjectivity. The context of the uses of the image lend it any authority or narrative impetus.
The photograph also has a history in amusements such as staged phantasmagoria and optical toys, as well as imaging techniques which use the subject as a template, such as silhouettes and waxworks. I can't help but think of early cinema, with its constructions of fantasy, in which the seams and tinsel are apparent, and as such we the viewers enter into the fiction whole-heartedly, accepting it as such.
Unanswered Prayers plays off of St Theresa's pious admonition by offering a profane bestiary in glittering antique interiors, which offer an undiluted happiness. The photograph is what we wish it to be, rather than what we must accept sadly. The intersection of the rational science of the camera and computer with the irrationality of a super-saturated image culture in which there is no gauge between "high" and "low", no distinct geography or sociology, provides an entry to a twilight palace of unbridled delights.
